A Sky-Pirates life

*PGS team recognizes the right of women to hoist flags and slit throats

Hoy all! Today we are going to break down some basics of the game; a sky-pirates life! We have laid out three broadly defined stages of a characters career. These are not hard definitions but more like guidelines to think about when you think about what you as a player wish to achieve and have the time to dedicate to.

Sky-pirate - Players will begin their first character as a newly reanimated person on a ship. A tutorial will take them through the basics, then will deposit them at a pirate haven.

From there the pirate will work jobbing on various ships, shops, or sailing with the navy. Ideally they will also join a crew and participate in events and tournaments. Though none of this will be required, pirates can play games as much or as little as they like.

Captain - Players who want to call the shots and have more than casual play will need to either purchase a ship and set sail, or, if they find the merchant life appealing, own and work a shop or tavern, or just organize crew activities. They can also get involved in local politics. This requires more time and attention, but the rewards are much greater. I intend to have notifications assist with this, allowing communication and even some actions without logging into the game.

A Captain does not need to be a part of a crew, though it can help them greatly. They also do not need a local crew to get involved in businesses or politics, but they will if they want to advance to the admiralty.

Captains can also hire NPCs, should they need crew for a ship or workers for a merchant shop. Ship captains may choose the level of hired NPCs with increasing costs per level. If the captain pulls off a good enough pilly, they may get a random recruit, an NPC they can retain for future sailing.

Admiralty - These are the most powerful players in the game, they are successful leaders, business owners and government officials. They will be the core of the game, those that play a significant amount and make the game both fun and challenging. The top players will be Royalty. They control multiple islands and crews, set goals and rewards, appoint governors and can create and activate events. Royalty will also have a direct ear of the developers, much like you all do now. Below them will be admirals, island governors, and crew leaders. These are the 'end game' positions, which will hopefully be rewarding for the long term players.

The ability for admirals to delegate responsibility will also be key for them to be free to still run a pilly, event or have a life, without having a burn out. Additionally, they may have a selection of NPCs, if they cannot find a qualified and willing player to take the position. These will not be as flexible or interactive, but will provide stable support.

The details for all of these possible positions will follow soon and are still subject to change.

    A note on Alts

Players will be able to have alts, 3 to start with, maybe we'll unlock more for $ or achievements. How the alts start will be determined by the progress and achievements of the current characters. The exact nature of this will be sorted out as we get the progression figured out but in general:

  • A pirate who has achieved a certain level of distinction as a player will be able to start an alt with some good quality weapons, clothing, and a small bag of money.
  • A captain of distinction may start an alt with equipment, a small ship, and enough money for supplies or investments.
  • An admiral may start an alt with a large ship, some NPC crew, some merits, and a decent pile of money to spend as they choose.

Creating an alt like this will spend your advanced slot so a player cannot create multiple alts with advanced starting equipment and gear from a single character. Unique starting outfits, gear and other things may also be part of these advanced alts.

This will also be a similar process to how we will be giving a head start option to YPP players who help in beta and make the switch.
